the
BEST day in Birmingham
with Erin Moon, author, producer, friend
@erinhmoon
Here is the list and links of places Erin and I talked about in the podcast.
Happy travels!! Hope its the BEST day!
Get Moving:
Red Mountain Park: Birmingham is the steel city and Red Mountain Park does a beautiful job of honoring that heritage. There are over 15 miles of hiking and walking trails in the park.
Get Coffee:
Church Street Coffee and Books – GET THAT Break-up Cookie! They use an independent roaster and coffee bean provider: Non-Fiction Coffee (full-disclosure, the podcast Erin works for is sometimes sponsored by Non-Fiction, but she truly believes it is the very best coffee, full stop.
Get Shopping:
Club Duquette – in Woodlawn
Winslet and Rhys – in Avondale
What’s on 2nd? – on 2nd Ave North
Jim Reed Booksellers – on 3rd Ave North – “To say call Jim Reed Books an ‘old bookstore’ is a bit like saying the Sistine Chapel has a good paint job.” You could easily get lost in this place and Jim would not care to find you.
Alabama Goods – in Homewood
Get Food:
BREAKFAST:
Big Bad Breakfast – Low Country Skillet with Andouille sausage, the Shrimp and Grits, or the Cathead Chicken Biscuit are all recommendations.
LUNCH:
Pizitz Food Hall – in Downtown.
There’s something for everyone: Busy Corner Cheese Shop (The Augusta with House-made Pimentio and Pickled Green Tomatoes), Alabama Biscuit (Crocque Madam), Ethiopian, Ramen, Pizza, Poke, Soul Food, Pops, Indian, Chicken and Waffles, it’s all there and NONE of it is bad.
O’Carrs is right across the street and they have Birmingham’s most perfect chicken salad and fruit plate.
Blue Pacific – in Hoover. Best Thai food you will ever have in a straight up gas station.
Get Inspired:
Birmingham Civil Rights Institute: Milestones Walking Tour
Get Touristy:
Vulcan Park and Museum: In Erin’s personal opinion, there’s really nothing funnier than the fact that Birmingham’s mascot is a giant, bare-assed steel sculpture. Largest cast-iron sculpture in the world.
Get Food:
Feeling rowdy:
Saws Juke Joint: – go to the Dunston Ave location because you get the menu with the Pork and Greens and the wings
Feeling refined:
Chez Lulu – best bread, chic food
Must Listen Podcasts:
The Popcast
Arc Stories – also, a live storytelling event that you could hit up!
